Water Crisis : When will we learn

Droughts are making the headlines again.Many states are drought ridden including Bihar, Mahrashtra & Uttar Pradesh.Now the food production will decrease &  prices of the commodities will in turn reach new heights.But those issues are secondary, we should consider the basic problem of  water scarcity.

It is not just that only farmers need water, even drinking water has became a major problem in India.I remember 10 years ago  we faced no hassles in getting drinking water from our well.Then we bathed in the evening as well.But one fine summer season the well dried up & we made futile efforts to revive it.

With more & more metalled roads being built the ground water is not being recharged properly & the water table is reducing drastically.Deforestation is another big cause.Now I am not saying that we should revert back to old times & stop all developmental activities, but we should start making amends for our wrongdoings.

The possible solutions are Rain water harvesting which has been made compulsory in Chennai & Bengaluru. More efficient use of the available water should be practiced.A discipline should be inculcated in children to save water wherever possible.Polluting the water bodies should be declared as a punishable crime.Planting & nurturing trees in your locality should become compulsory.It is our duty to mend broken pipes & close unnecessarily opened taps.

Farmers should not depend on Government for providing irrigation but make sustainable arrangements by themselves.There are a lot of examples set by Indians such as Rajendra Pachauri , Sri Padre.Making local watersheds & using drip irrigation is one of the feasible solution to the problem.Community involvement is the ultimate solution.

The list can go on, but the most important thing is to take action.

We had been taught all these things in our school education.I remember one of my teacher saying that we should not make bores in our locality as more & more bore wells can deplete the water table & that’s what exactly happened.Now a days my parents have to wake up early in the morning to fill all the vessels so that they can store enough water for daily requirements.

Start taking action now otherwise we will soon run out of life(read Water) on Earth.As Kabir said ” Bin Paani sab Soon” which means everything is futile without water.
